The ARLIS/NA Northwest Chapter is delighted to invite ARLIS/NA members to join us for a virtual talk by Sarah Meilleur, CEO of Calgary Public Library. 

Sarah led the design thinking, completion and launch of Calgary’s Central Library that has seen over three million visitors since opening in November 2018.   Designed by Snøhetta architects, the Central Library was included on Architectural Digest’s list of the 12 most anticipated buildings of 2018.

The virtual presentation will be taking place on Wednesday, December 7^th from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM MST on MS Teams.

Sarah is a recognized speaker at international conferences, has authored numerous journal articles, and has lectured at Harvard University on library design.  She believes in supporting the community through volunteering and has served as the vice-chair for the Calgary Heritage Authority, on the Cultural Leadership Council and the Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee.  She was also the recipient of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 under 40 award in 2011.  Sarah is passionate about the ways in which public libraries transform lives and she works to foster curiosity, innovation, belonging, and fantastic visitor experiences.

Virtual Fall/Winter Meeting Speaker Announcement:  Haema Sivanesan, 1:30 PST | 2:30 MST, Friday, December 2, 2022

We are delighted announce that the speaker for our Northwest Chapter Fall/Winter meeting will be Haema Sivanesan, Curator at the Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff Centre.

Haema has held leadership and curatorial positions in public art galleries, artist-run centres and festivals across Canada and around the world.  Her curatorial work focuses on non-western, post-colonial and transnational histories, world views and practices. In 2018, she was the recipient of an Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York, Curatorial Research Fellowship; and in 2016, the recipient of a Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, Hong Kong, multi-year research and exhibition development grant for the project and publication, In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art and Social Practice (Figure 1 and Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 2022). Recent exhibitions include, Imagining Fusang: Exploring Chinese and Indigenous Encounters (2019), Fiona Tan: Ascent (2019), and Supernatural: Art, Technology and the Forest (2018).

Haema will be presenting on the publication, In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art and Social Practice.

Tania Willard, Secwepemc Nation, works within the shifting ideas of contemporary and traditional as it relates to cultural arts and production.Often working with bodies of knowledge and skills that are conceptually linked to her interest in intersections between Aboriginal and other cultures. Willard has worked as a curator in residence with grunt gallery and Kamloops Art Gallery. Willard’s curatorial work includes Beat Nation: Art Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture, a national touring exhibition first presented at Vancouver Art Gallery in 2011. As assistant professor in Creative Studies at UBCO (Kelowna BC) currently her research focuses on Secwepemc aesthetics/language/land and interrelated Indigenous art practices. Willard’s projects include BUSH gallery, a conceptual space for land based art and action led by Indigenous artists.

Hosted by the Book Club of Washington, join librarians and archivists from the special collections and rare books libraries at Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Victoria for an introduction to their distinctive collections. The speakers will share highlights of book arts and self-published works originating in or featuring British Columbia. Presenters include Heather Dean, Associate Director of Special Collections at the University of Victoria Libraries; Melissa Salrin, Head of Special Collections & Rare Books at Simon Fraser University; and Chelsea Shriver, librarian at Rare Books and Special Collections at the University of British Columbia.

View Elisheba Johnson’s artist talk, recorded as part of the ARLIS/NA Northwest Chapter’s Fall Chapter Meeting on December 4, 2020. This event was hosted by the ARLIS/NA Northwest Chapter with a special funding grant from ARLIS/NA.

Elisheba Johnson, Seattle-based curator, public artist and administrator, holds a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts and was the owner of Faire Gallery Café, a multi-use art space that held art exhibitions, music shows, poetry readings and creative gatherings. For six years Johnson worked at the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture on capacity building initiatives and racial equity in public art. Johnson is currently a member of the Americans for the Arts Emerging Leaders Network advisory council and has won four Americans for the Arts Public Art Year in Review Awards for her work. She currently co-manages Wa Na Wari, a Black art center in Seattle’s Central Area that uses the arts to build community and resist displacement.

The ARLIS/NA Northwest Chapter will host its annual business meeting on Thursday, May 6, at 10:00am PT / 1:00pm ET.

The Northwest Chapter of ARLIS/NA is inviting applications for our 2021 Virtual Conference Attendance Award. This year the Northwest Executive Committee will provide three awards to cover conference registration costs to attend the ARLIS/NA 49th Annual Conference, taking place online from May 11-13, 2021.

Please review the qualifications below before submitting a brief personal statement (250-300 words) of how receiving this award would benefit your professional development. Email your application to nw.arlisna (at) gmail.com with the subject line ‘ARLIS/NA Conference Award Application’. Applications are due April 12, 2021.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Applicants must be members of the ARLIS/NA Northwest Chapter and members of ARLIS/NA. However, students living in the Northwest region (Alaska – Alberta – British Columbia – Idaho – Oregon – Washington – Yukon Territory) do not need to be members of the Chapter or the National organization to apply.
• Preference will be given to first-time attendees, to those who are participating in the conference as a speaker, moderator, session recorder, or serving as a committee member.
• Financial need will be considered as part of the application, including but not limited to: applicants that are unable to receive institutional funding towards conference attendance, as well as those who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
• The Chapter welcomes applications from individuals whose identity, experiences, scholarship, and/or service have prepared them to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Chapter and the profession.

Award winners must submit a report to the Northwest Executive Committee within one month of the conference, summarizing conference activities and experiences for Chapter communications, and are encouraged to stay professionally active with the Chapter. The award winners’ reports will be posted on the Northwest Chapter website.

The Northwest Chapter’s Annual Fall Meeting will take place via Zoom on Friday, December 4, 2020. There is no cost to attend this year’s meeting; however registration is required.  To register, please fill out this Google Form:

Searching for Truth: An art practice that is always asking a question
Elisheba Johnson will discuss her career trajectory as the daughter of a philosopher, conceptual artist and administrator. There will be a Q&A after the talk.

The Northwest Chapter of ARLIS/NA (Art Libraries Society of North America) is inviting applications for our 2020 Travel Award. The recipient of this award will receive $500 to help cover registration and travel expenses for the annual ARLIS/NA 48^th Annual Conference in Saint Louis, taking place April 20-24.

Applications must include a personal statement of financial need and how receiving this award would benefit your professional development.

Please note: Applicants must be current members of ARLIS/NW and ARLIS/NA and must live in the Northwest region (Alaska – Alberta – British Columbia – Idaho – Oregon – Washington – Yukon Territory).

Award winners must submit a report to the ARLIS/NA Northwest Executive Committee summarizing conference activities and experiences for Chapter communications and are encouraged to stay professionally active with the local chapter.

About the Burke Museum and Speaker

Newly opened on October 12, the New Burke is a flagship facility for the Washington State Museum of Natural History and Culture. The New Burke turns the museum “inside-out,” breaking down traditional museum barriers and inviting visitors to be part of a working research facility. The new, 113,000 sq. ft. building is 66% larger than the former facility. Nearly 60% of the museum is accessible or visible to visitors (compared to just over 30% in the former facility). Twelve visible, state-of-the-art labs and workrooms, along with an artists’ workshop will serve more students and researchers.

Admission fees will be included in registration costs.

 

Ashley Verplank McLelland serves as the Rights and Reproductions Manager of Ethnology at the Burke Museum. She is a professor specializing in Native Art of the Pacific Northwest.
